About Us:
Marguerite John is about identity and difference.
We appeal to those with a strong sense of individual style — whose clothing is personal and tied in with their identity and self-expression. What you wear communicates who you are to the world. The point is not for others to “get it”, but for you to feel more authentically you.
We are a blend of the cerebral and the playful. Knowing our history as both artists and garment designers is vital for intelligent, thoughtful design. The result of this can be seen in details both subtle and bold. A very liberal nod to the conceptual and absurd accounts for the playful. We like atypical silhouettes, unusual fabrics and quirky detail. We are interested in how the garment moves on you and how you move in it. Fashion, like art, has endless possibilities.
We have in mind, too, those who fall outside the gender binary* and to those who are just interested in playing with its signifiers. We are interested in what makes an item ‘masculine’ or ‘feminine’ and how that originated. We like to mix it up, confuse and challenge. ‘Androgyny’ per se, is a not our thing; producing yet another hoodie and T-shirt ensemble is tired, safe and irrelevant. All genders are cheered on!
Do you and dress on purpose.
We hope you stay tuned to our new developments as we evolve and grow!
*Our name Marguerite John is an homage to this. Marguerite Radclyffe Hall was an author and poet who wrote the first book detailing the queer experience of gender dysphoria as well as same-sex attraction. ‘The Well of Loneliness’ was autobiographic but released as a fiction novel in 1928. This novel was soon censored and remained in England until 1959, when the Obscene Publications Act was amended. It is today an unprecedented classic of queer literature. In her personal life, she let go of her birth name Marguerite and as an adult was known as John to her lovers and friends. Marguerite John is therefore honoring the journey we all must take to become our true selves and to ultimately live out loud.
