Bio: Founder, Head Designer.

Sara Thobe was born an artist. This was seen very early on through her drawing skills, her writing, but more than that, through her personality. Fitting in as a young child was never within her ability; not on purpose, merely because she did not know why she didn’t fit in.

This and a very visible speech impediment kept others away and subjected her to ridicule, which served to make her sensitive to those who are also alienated due to difference. This isolation proved to be an asset to her creative development. Drawing, painting, writing and making things filled her spare time. This was essential as it was her only real voice.

She found her tribe at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Students here are expected to be independent and determine their own curriculum. The school’s “Anything Goes” philosophy allowed her the freedom to explore within a community of like-minded students.

A painting career (fine art “purist”) did not seem financially viable so she pursued graphic design. Fortunately, this career helped hone her skills in color, composition and design, and gave her the business experience that would prove vital.

She made the jump from graphic to fashion design soon after the gift of a corporate downsizing. She moved to New York City to attend Parsons, the New School for Design. She discovered that fashion fulfilled her need to not only be an artist, but to connect with the world in a more tangible, physical, and meaningful way.

The label Marguerite John is about individuality and difference. We want to help you play with what you wear, to encourage that inner misfit. Experiment with your sense of style.
